A civil matter is a private dispute between individuals or businesses that is settled in a court of law. Civil matters can involve a number of issues, including: 

Contracts: Legal agreements that establish the rights and obligations of the parties involved 

Property rights: Rights to private property, as stated in the Constitution or in state or federal law 

Compensation: Claims for damages 

Purchase annulment: Disputes over the validity of a purchase 

Evictions: Disputes over evictions 

Payment demands: Disputes over undisputed payment demands 

Civil cases are non-criminal lawsuits. Some examples of civil lawsuits include: Breach of contract, Probate, Divorce, Negligence, and Copyright violations. 

A party can start a civil action against another party if an event occurs that creates a cause of action. A cause of action is the set of facts that gives one party the right to take legal action against another. Civil actions usually need to be brought within a certain time limit after the cause of action occurs.
