| Pride, Legacy, and Responsibility: My Journey with the Bangladesh Supreme Court Bar Association |
The roots of the Association trace back to the colonial judicial system established under the Indian High Courts Act 1861 enacted by the British Parliament. Following the establishment of the High Court of Judicature at Calcutta on 14 May 1862, the judicial legacy later extended to the then East Pakistan High Court after the partition under the Indian Independence Act 1947.
In November 1948, several visionary legal luminaries, including A. K. Fazlul Huq, Prakash Pakrashi, Syed Modares Ali, and S. R. Pal, formally established the then East Pakistan High Court Bar Association. Their vision was to create a united platform for advocates to uphold professional dignity, legal excellence, and the independence of the Bar.
After the independence of Bangladesh in 1971, the Association was reorganized in 1972 as the Bangladesh Supreme Court Bar Association under the Bangladesh Legal Practitioners and Bar Council Order. Since then, the Association has played a historic role in safeguarding constitutional values, judicial independence, rule of law, and democratic governance.
Throughout history, the Supreme Court Bar Association has stood beside the people during critical national moments. It raised its voice against authoritarianism during the emergencies of 1975 and 1982, protested against the erosion of democracy, and strongly opposed the 8th Amendment to the Constitution, which threatened the structural integrity and independence of the judiciary. The Association has consistently contributed to reforms in Supreme Court rules, legal procedures, and judicial practices.
As a proud member of the Bangladesh Supreme Court Bar Association, I feel deeply inspired by this glorious heritage. Membership in this institution is not only a professional identity; it is a commitment to justice, ethics, courage, and service to the nation. Every appearance before the Honorable Court reminds us that the legal profession is a noble calling dedicated to protecting constitutional rights and ensuring access to justice for all citizens.
The legacy built by generations of distinguished advocates continues to guide young lawyers today. It teaches us that the Bar must always remain fearless in defending democracy, human rights, and judicial independence. As members of this historic institution, we carry forward a tradition of integrity, leadership, and unwavering dedication to the rule of law.
The Bangladesh Supreme Court Bar Association is, therefore, not only a symbol of legal excellence but also a guardian of constitutional democracy and the conscience of the legal profession in Bangladesh.
